Speculation About The Next Generation iOS Apps

In this post I’m going to go through some of what we know so far about the iPhone 5 and what this means for the next generation of iOS apps.
The iPhone 5 is rumored to have the following things:

  • Faster Processor
  • Faster RAM
  • Bigger Memory
  • Be your next wallet (NFC)
  • Improved Video and CCD Still Camera
  • Be your car keys and airplane boarding pass
Depending on the API Apple allows developers to exploit, we’ll probably see the following type of apps in the forthcoming iPhone.

Games with PS2-Level Graphics

In previous post I stated that iOS developers of the current generation of apps should stay away from making 3D games but iPhone 5 could change all this. A faster processor means a better graphics chip. iPhone 5 is rumored to have a dual-core SGX543 GPU. Some are even going so far to say it will have a multi-core chip. If the rumor comes true this means we’ll see games with stunning graphics.

iWallet

The NFC (Near Field Communication) wallet feature is likely to be a built-in iPhone app. Hopefully Apple will open the API of wallet feature to developers, we might start to see banks and credit card companies offering this type of app, where the app is your credit card. You could then access your balance, pay bills and pay at stores straight from that app, simply by swapping the iPhone over a detector. This is pretty revolutionary and may even phase out the plastic cards. It isn’t such a farfetched idea, Google’s Android phone – Nexus S already includes NFC and this kind of application is quite common in Japan.

Improved Video and CCD Camera

The better the quality of images, the easier it is for our iPhones to understand or read the captured image. This means we’ll see better augmented reality apps and even better facial recognition. An example of how this could change things is the Facebook app. Think about when you’re in the middle of taking a photo the app automatically recognizes faces and tags them even before the photo is taken.

Refined Car Key

We may start to see car makers making apps for specific models of their cars. So when you buy a car, you have an option to download the app, register it to your car and use it as a car key. You may even use the app to find out information about the current statistics of your car (e.g. anything is needed for repair or when was the last oil change). This shouldn’t be too far from us. Actually, you’re already seeing apps like AutoBot that integrates with cars. The only downside with 3rd party apps like this is that you have to buy a $300 connector for your car. So expect a better and cheaper solution to come in the near future.
Keep in mind that this is just pure speculation. However, as Apple has been getting more exposure over the last few years, the rumors keep getting even more solid. Let’s wait and see.
